Mittens

These would be for about a 4 year old

1 - 50 gram ball

Knitting Needles   4:25 mm

**Mittens are so easy  to increase or decrease the size just decrease 4 stitches or increase 4 stitches

Cast on  32  stitches   Right Mitten   and Left Mitten

Knit 1, Purl 1 for 2 inches or 3 inches for a long cuff

work Knit 6  rows

**Note   to increase the rows for larger sizes increase by 2 rows   or for smaller sizes  decrease by 2 rows

Now make the thumb

Knit 16 sts and make an increase in the each of the next 2 stitches then finish the row

Next row purl back

Next row   do another increase  so knit 16 then  increase 1 stitch  knit 2 stitches then

do another increase and finish the row

next row purl back

Next row increase  knit 16 then increase in the first st and knit 4  then do another increase and finish the row

now purl back

Continue increasing in this way on the first and last stitch and increasing the stitches in between  every other row  for the thumb, till your total stitches on the needle are  40 stitches

Then purl the next row

Now  we do the thumb so knit  26 stitches  and cast one on and turn

**Left mitten   is 21 stitches   cast one on and turn

To Do the right mitt knit 26 stitches and follow the same pattern as below

purl back on 11 sts

work for about 1 1/4 to  ** 1 1/2 inches to 2 for larger sizes  doing knit 1 row ,   purl 1 row 

then knit 2 together across the row    and  cut the wool to about 10 inches     Now thread a needle and put the needle through each stitch and draw up and sew down the thumb to close it

Now to continue with the body of the mitt

at the base of the thumb cast on 2 stitches to close the hole.  So you should have 32 stitches on the needle

Pick up and purl 2 stitches at the base of the thumb and purl across 1/2 the row

Now knit 1 row and purl 1 row for about 5 1/2 inches you will want to end with the knit side facing     or knit 1 row and purl 1 row for 11 rows

**Note

To enlarge the thumb  or to decrease the thumb  just add or decrease 1 stitch

Now shape the top 

knit 1,  knit 2 together   1 time   --knit 10 sts, knit 2 tog., twice, knit 10 , knit 2 together 1 time and knit 1

purl 1 row

Next row do 8 in between 

purl 1 row

Next row do 6 in between 

Repeat these 2  rows  till you have 16 stitches on the needle

Now you should be on a purl row 

Cast off in purl

Sew up the mitt and you are finished
